What Is a License Plate Lookup?
A license plate lookup is a search that converts a license plate number into the full vehicle record tied to it. Every registered vehicle in the US has a VIN ( Vehicle Identification Number ) linked to its plate through state DMV records. A plate lookup bridges those two: you enter the plate, we return the VIN and everything attached to it.
What that means in practice: you can walk up to any vehicle, enter or scan the plate, and within seconds know what it is, what it's worth, what it's been through, and whether it matches what the seller is telling you - all from your phone.
What You Get From a Plate Lookup
One plate number unlocks the full vehicle record. Here's what's included in every lookup:
VIN & OEM specs
The registered VIN, plus full factory specs: make, model, trim, year, engine, drivetrain, body type, and manufacturing origin.
Odometer history
Every recorded mileage reading across inspections, sales, and title transfers. Gaps or inconsistencies point to potential rollback fraud.
Title & brand status
Current title type: clean, salvage, rebuilt, junk, flood, or lemon and any brand changes in the vehicle's history.
Photos
Images from past auctions, dealer listings, and damage reports. See the vehicle's actual condition, not just a description.
Auction records
Full auction history from Copart, IAAI, Manheim, and others including condition grades, sale prices, and damage disclosures.
Market value
Current market pricing, historical price trends, and active comparable listings across the US so you know what the vehicle is actually worth.

Who Uses License Plate Lookup
Private car buyers
Before agreeing to a price, run the plate. Know the real mileage, title status, accident history, and market value, not just what the seller tells you.
Auto dealers
Appraise trade-ins and auction vehicles on the spot. Verify specs, pull history, and check market comps without leaving the lot.
Towing & Repossession
Confirm plate to VIN, check vehicle image, color and features, and log the GPS location - all from the phone before you pull away.
Auto shops
Snap the plate and have the VIN, make, model, and engine specs ready before calling your parts distributor. Keep a history log for returning clients. Order parts while away from the vehicle.
Insurance adjusters
Verify a vehicle's specs and title status at the scene. Pull auction and damage photos to cross-check claimed condition.
Fleet managers
Track specs, recall status, and history across an entire fleet without manual data entry or chasing paperwork through multiple systems.
What Our Customers Say
Trusted by teams in the field
"Working in repossession in Pittsburgh, PA, the plate lookup app has become essential to our nightly operations. We rely on it to verify plate to VIN matches, confirm vehicle color, and identify distinguishing features that keep our team accurate and safe in the field. The photo access is especially valuable."
Christian, Field Investigator
Repossession Company, Pittsburgh, PA
"As the owner of an automotive service facility handling 40 - 50 cars a day, this app has completely streamlined how I order parts. I simply snap a photo of the license plate and instantly have the VIN, year, make, model, and engine specs ready before I even call my distributor. The history log is a game changer too, giving me a reliable paper trail for every vehicle so I can look up information and order parts for returning clients even when the car isn't in the shop."
Mike, Autoshop Owner

"Before this app, documenting a vehicle on scene was a headache, now everything we need is handled right from the phone before we pull away. I can decode the VIN, snap damage photos, and have the exact GPS location all logged in one place, so when questions come up later I'm covered and don't have to scroll through my camera roll hunting for proof."

Yes. Looking up a vehicle by its license plate is legal in the United States. Under the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA), the data returned is vehicle information - VIN, specs, title status, history - not personal owner details. You are not accessing anyone's private information; you are accessing the record of the vehicle itself.
A plate lookup returns the linked VIN and everything attached to it: make, model, year, trim, engine, title status (clean, salvage, rebuilt, flood, etc.), odometer history, auction records with photos, title brands, accidents and damages, sales history, and current market value. It's the same data that dealerships and insurance companies use to evaluate vehicles.
No. Personal owner information - name, address, contact details - is protected under the Driver's Privacy Protection Act and is not returned by any legal vehicle lookup service. What you get is vehicle data: what the car is, what it's been through, and what it's worth.
Accuracy depends on how up to date the underlying DMV registration records are. In most states, registration data is current within a few days. The vehicle history data like auctions, title transfers, odometer readings is sourced from insurance companies, state agencies, and auction houses and is updated continuously.
Plate Lookup covers all 50 U.S. states. Coverage depth varies slightly by state based on what DMV and title records each state makes available, but every state is supported for plate-to-VIN lookup and full vehicle history reports.
The state is required to match a plate to a VIN because the same plate number can exist in multiple states simultaneously. If you're not sure of the state, check the plate itself - most US plates include the state name. If you have the VIN but not the plate, you can enter the VIN directly instead.
